By About two years after its initial release as a kind of display-less virtual computer, Sightful’s Spacetop is now prepared for launch as a Windows application that requires a membership and may be used on third-party hardware, such as laptops with NPUs.
Spacetop: What is it? Sightful’s Spacetop AR technology allows you to work on a virtual “multi-monitor” configuration almost anywhere by enclosing you in a massive 100-inch virtual screen through a pair of AR glasses from XReal. The main draw is that the virtual workspace allows you to work in confined spaces, such as a hotel room or an airplane, while yet providing some of the benefits of a home office.
The Spacetop, which resembled a Chromebook without a screen, was unveiled by Sightful in 2023. Instead of using the previously tethered AR glasses, Sightful now uses the xReal Air extreme 2 AR glasses. The AR arrangement encircled you with virtual monitors, so it’s okay if you didn’t have a Thunderbolt dock and numerous displays.
The idea behind today’s Spacetop Bundle is still the same, however there are some adjustments. Sightful employs the XReal Air Ultra 2 AR glasses in place of AR glasses that were basically attached to the computer solution. The biggest change is to the computer: in order to power the Spacetop program itself, you’ll need a laptop with an NPU of some kind (a basic NPU like a Core Ultra 100 series is sufficient, but a Copilot+ PC isn’t). Yes, Spacetop is currently a Windows-based membership program that costs $200 a year.
In order to effectively block out unwanted light, the Xreal Air Ultra 2 AR glasses have three dimming settings and produce 1080p images per eye at up to 120 Hz. Prescription progressive lenses cost $150, while prescription single-lens inserts cost $50. Custom lenses are also available. Regretfully, the Spacetop/XReal headset does not work with glasses.
This idea may sound similar to Apple’s Vision Pro, but the Xreal AR glasses from Spacetop weigh only 83 grams, whereas the Apple headset may weigh up to 650 grams. A neck spasm is just waiting to happen.
