Many people are currently wanting to switch to Windows 11. And it seems that many of them are struggling to do so. Microsoft’s official Media Creation Tool, one of the most widely used ways to switch from Windows 10 to the new operating system, has a crippling problem in its most recent version. Whoops!

To install a copy of Windows on a computer, you can utilize the Media Creation Tool, which is a very easy method of downloading a short application from Microsoft and burning it onto a USB stick. It’s a great way to start again and install a new version, especially if you need to do it for another computer, such as for family tech assistance. According to Microsoft, which reported it as a problem on October 10th, 11 days after the tool was updated, that is the case. Windows 10 workstations running the 22H2 update are experiencing the tool “close unexpectedly, displaying no error message,” according to the official “Known Issues” page for Windows, which was observed by Windows Latest.

It is unfortunate (or humorous, depending on your point of view) that this tool update came right before Microsoft’s self-imposed deadline for a Windows 11 upgrade. Oh, and although the name refers to the “second half of 2022” release, 22H2 is really the most recent complete version of Windows 10. If you wish to be eligible for an additional year of Microsoft security updates, you must be on this one.

Given that it took Microsoft more than a week to formally remark on the matter, it appears doubtful that this problem is impacting the vast majority of Windows 10 users using the Media Creation Tool. If you wish to upgrade, there are several other options available, including simply borrowing a Windows 11 computer where the tool appears to be functioning properly. You may also make a bootable flash drive the old-fashioned manner by simply downloading the ISO.

However, in a position that was already looking quite bad, it’s not a great look. As you read these words, I suppose someone at Microsoft is frantically trying to fix the issue because it has been noted on the Known Issues page.
