Even though you’re completely content with your Steam Deck, you can’t help but be envious of the somewhat more recent OLED model. What should a gamer do? You can start printing if you also have an OLED USB-C monitor and a 3D printer! One Deck owner did just that, making Valve’s portable gaming powerhouse much less portable by placing a 13-inch screen on top of it.
“I made this because I didn’t want to buy a new Steam Deck just to have an OLED screen,” says user djared on Printables. Yeah, that’s funny. Similar to those phone mounts for a console controller, the 3D-printed bracket clamps onto the Steam Deck’s front screen. It is specifically designed to accommodate the unusual rotating kickstand of this Innocn 13.3-inch portable USB-C monitor, while still providing plenty of space for the USB-C cable to be connected.
The Steam Deck should be able to output to the 1080p screen and benefit from that rich OLED color saturation because of its simple interoperability with USB-C devices and external monitors. However, what happens if the Steam Deck has to simultaneously power a laptop-sized screen and its operations? Any arrangement like that is likely to drain its battery more quickly than a teenager performing a 7-Eleven Slurpee. Holding a Steam Deck and a portable display at the same time must be quite the workout, therefore, I’m also curious if Djared is a bodybuilder.
If you would want to test printing the design out for yourself or modifying it for your own portable monitor, it is available as a free STL file. Enjoy yourself, and don’t forget to take a leg day after you’re done.
