Unlike other Steam Deck-style gadgets, Lenovo’s Legion Go gaming handheld, which just received a full-fat sequel, is constructed differently. And it’s more than just marketing jargon. The device’s most unique feature is its kickstand and detachable Switch-style controllers, which turn it into a small PC gaming tablet. That was deemed inadequate by one modder, who converted it into a small PC gaming laptop.
Reddit user MysteriousAlarm897 made a small 8.8-inch laptop using the Legion Go hardware by 3D manufacturing a unique frame for the main tablet design, then adding a Lenovo keyboard and numerous extra batteries to the bottom area.
Although the photographs show that it is nearly three inches thick, the fit and polish are excellent for a custom build. As Liliputing points out, the base has cutouts for speakers and air circulation in addition to a bespoke USB-C hub that adds more ports. It’s a neat little setup that probably required some tweaking. A “slim” variant of the design eliminates the additional battery pack and trims it by around an inch.
The Legion Go’s versatility is making it a popular choice for 3D-printed products, and at least one Etsy seller creates a keyboard add-on that turns the tiny gadget into something more like a Microsoft Surface. I wonder whether the Legion Go 2 will stimulate the same level of imagination. or whether its exorbitant cost will put off potential customers.
