Ergonomic or gaming keyboard? Usually, you have to make a decision. However, as Old El Paso Tacos once said, “Por qué no los dos?” That’s the idea behind the Asus ROG Falcata, a wireless gaming board that connects via a USB-C bridge after splitting apart. At Computex, Adam Patrick Murray got his hands dirty.
The Falcata is a 75 percent board that can be split into two parts, allowing for a more tactical cant or more ergonomic typing, depending on the situation. Although it’s not the first split keyboard to make such a claim, it’s the first to be released by a major PC gaming accessory brand like Asus, which claims to have worked with professional eSports gamers to develop the design.
There are numerous ways to modify the design. There are eight distinct screw-in foot locations—four on each side—as well as a small additional one on the wrist rest, which is detachable. Because tenting is crucial in keyboards, just like it is in the woods! For the twitchy shooter enthusiasts, there are additional features like a small volume control on the left side, four levels of sound damping, 800Hz polling (yes, even wirelessly), hall effect switches, and a little RGB bling.
You don’t need the Armoury Crate software for this keyboard, despite Asus PR telling me it’s an option, which contradicts Adam in the video. Asus has heard my complaints about it. The keyboard may be programmed independently, or you can create unique profiles using a web-based interface. Well done, Asus. More businesses ought should (and are) doing that.
I asked Asus PR if it would be possible to unplug the right side of the keyboard and use the left side alone as a specialized wireless keypad because I find it quite interesting. No comment, but when the Falcata releases later this year, we’ll undoubtedly learn more.
