A decent mechanical keyboard is available. There are inexpensive mechanical keyboards available. Even a decent, low-cost mechanical keyboard is available. However, it’s difficult to locate one from a well-known gaming PC manufacturer with correspondingly strong software support. You can handle it today with the K70 Core, a reconditioned board that costs $44.99 and is available directly on Corsair’s web store.
With its full-sized size, excellent, pre-lubricated switches, sturdy construction, and excellent internal damping, this board was already a fairly decent buy at $100. In my review, I referred to the K70 Core as “the best typing you can get for $100” since it provides incredibly smooth motion for both typing and gaming. It has a large, hefty volume knob, but the two things I didn’t like were the fixed USB cable and the absence of specialized media keys.
Unfortunately, this refurbished board only comes with a 90-day guarantee, but it still cuts the price in half and more. However, I believe it’s a fair trade-off given the great features and Corsair’s really good gaming software. I would suggest the G.Skill KM250 if you want a smaller board with hot-swap switches, but noticeably fewer software options. See the PCWorld roundup for further keyboard suggestions.
Keep in mind that there are likely only a few K70 Cores available because this is a refurbished sale. It appears that the comparable keyboard offer that we previously highlighted from Corsair’s refurb store is no longer available.
